Garland Explores: Dallas. The 1913 Classic Six (#323 of 2,999), is the oldest running Chevy in the world. Originally purchased in South Texas and driven daily until 1936, when it was bought by Fort Worth Chevy dealer, it is now a part of the Sloan Museum, Flint, Michigan.

Decades ago, the downtown square was a parking lot for wagons and horses and, later, cars. Dedicated by Rosalynn Carter on Labor Day, 1978—while her husband, President Jimmy Carter, was at Camp David with Sadat and Begin—the current design must have seemed a good idea at the time. However, it is isolated from the very town center it is supposed to be a part of. It is a maze of bricks and planters, a fountain and even deeper reflecting pool (sometimes), with barriers to pedestrian traffic on all sides, and is judged by some to be one of the worst squares in the North Texas area.

The Plaza Theater stood empty for a number of years until the city bought it and restored it as a performance venue, which is in constant use. The empty space next door has been that way for almost twenty years, the owners afraid of failure.

Most of the buildings on the Downtown square were built just after 1900. Baker's Furniture has occupied various buildings on the south side for many years and the store's success has seen the family open other furniture stores in the region.

After Morgan Music came Larry Morgan Music. The name Morgan has long been synonymous with music, once being the largest sound and music supplier in the Southwest. All the great entertainers—Hendrix, Joplin, Z Z Top, and tons more—either walked through the doors in Downtown Garland or stepped on a stage with equipment from Morgan's. And all the sales people drove Corvettes. To commemorate that long music period, Larry commissioned a mural for the outside of his store by a famous New York graffiti artist. Only the city considered murals to be signs and halted the work until a permit could be approved. Meanwhile the artist returned east, Larry died, and the mural slowly peels, interrupted.

In 1998, Randall Cooper and his partners donated a large parcel of land that had been the family for many years to the City of Garland for use as a park, which was named in memory of Carl Cooper and Cecil Cooper, Randall's brother who had served on the Garland City Council. Mr Cooper was recently able to visit one of the locations where new signs had been erected.
